Andrew Smulian is Chairman Emeritus of Akerman. He served as Akerman's Chairman and CEO for 12 years, transforming the firm through strategic growth, a commitment to advancing client-driven initiatives, and a focus on building a culture of collaborative innovation. Under Andrew's leadership, Akerman grew into a powerhouse law firm with more than 700 lawyers and business professionals serving clients across the Americas from 25 offices nationwide, including New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and Washington D.C.
During his tenure as CEO, Andrew launched the industry's first R&D co-venture with clients and expanded Akerman's commitment to social impact with a first-of-its-kind partnership with the National Court Appointed Special Advocates Association to provide foster children with a voice. These innovative initiatives and others received national recognition and attracted the attention of the Financial Times, which honored Andrew as one of the top 10 legal innovators in North America and ranked Akerman as one of North America's most forward-thinking and socially responsible law firms.
Andrew joined the firm in 1995, becoming one of South Florida's most highly regarded real estate lawyers. He has counseled clients in connection with billions of dollars of complex real estate transactions, gaining consistent rankings in Chambers USA and other leading publications. Andrew is Trustee Emeritus of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.
