Richard Milstein Authors Huffington Post Blog on Income Tax Filings by Same Sex Couples
March 28, 2012
Richard Milstein recently authored a guest blog, "Income Tax Filings and Civil Disobedience," in the Huffington Post.
In the blog, Richard discusses the use of civil disobedience throughout the gay rights movement and how it may continue in this generation. He points out that legally married same sex couples are not recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as "married." This distinction can affect their income tax filing, including whether the couple files jointly or seperately, what deductions are allowed, and the amount of taxes they pay each year. Richard opines that as a result, some same sex couples may choose to file as married, even though the federal government may penalize them.
Richard has been invited to post regularly to the blog, so look for additional entries of his on legal issues affecting same sex couples in the weeks ahead.
