Akerman's Karen Buesing Appointed to Board of The Florida Bar Foundation, Board of Metropolitan Ministries
May 5, 2017
Akerman LLP, a top 100 U.S. law firm serving clients across the Americas, today announced that Karen Buesing, a partner in the firm's Labor & Employment Practice Group in Tampa, has been appointed to the boards of directors of both The Florida Bar Foundation and Metropolitan Ministries. She will serve for a three-year term at each organization, effective July 1, 2017.

Buesing is a longtime advocate for equal justice and pro bono services, and she has led extraordinary efforts benefiting disadvantaged youth and families. She formerly served on the advisory council for the Lazydays Homeless Youth Program, where she actively worked to secure legislation on behalf of homeless youth, including laws in place today that enable certain liberties to youth without a parent or guardian. She has served as volunteer attorney with Crossroads for Florida Kids, serving children in foster care. Her intense commitment to improve the lives of others also led Buesing and her husband to take in six youths who were either at-risk or outright homeless over the course of a decade.

Buesing has contributed to many community impact initiatives in the Tampa Bay area. For more than 25 years, she has chaired a selection committee for the board of directors of Bay Area Legal Services, helping to make Bay Area one of the model legal services corporations in the United States. She also was instrumental in founding the Prosperity Campaign of Hillsborough County, which captured more than $11 million in available tax credits for the working poor during its first year.

Buesing has received numerous awards recognizing her commitment to public service and outstanding pro bono legal representation, including the 2014 Florida Supreme Court Tobias Simon Pro Bono Service Award, The Florida Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award and the James R. Kynes Pro Bono Service Award. Buesing also is a demonstrated leader in the legal community, having served on the board of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the board of the Hillsborough Association for Women Lawyers, and as co-chair of the American Bar Association's EEO Committee, among others.

As a member of the board of The Florida Bar Foundation, Buesing will help advance the organization's mission of providing greater access to justice throughout the state. As a member of the board of Metropolitan Ministries, she will contribute to its mission of alleviating suffering, promoting dignity, and instilling self-sufficiency for homeless and at-risk families.

Board certified in Labor and Employment Law by The Florida Bar, Buesing has represented management in employment law matters for more than 30 years. She represents small and large businesses in litigation and administrative proceedings, as well as in all aspects of employment counseling and training. Buesing is a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, and has received top honors in Chambers USA and The Best Lawyers in America as one of the leading lawyers in her area of practice.
